As we all know, toddlers and kids can be super fussy when it comes to meal time. The morning rush to school and work can play a role in either skipping breakfast all together or reaching for a not so healthy option to save time and at least keep bellies full until lunch.
Results have shown that the wrong food choices at breakfast can result in a lack of energy and poor performance in children at school, physically and academically. Although it can be a struggle at times, your kids (and yourself) will benefit much more from a nutritious breakfast at the start of each day. This will also create healthy habits for when your kids reach their teenage and adult years.
Here are our favourite healthy breakfast ideas that your kids will love, just adjust portion sizes according to the age and appetite of your child. Many of these options can be prepared the night before to make it super easy to grab and go in the morning!
- Fruit salad with greek yogurt
- Wholegrain toast with eggs (boiled, poached, fried in olive oil)
- Breakfast egg, ham and spinach muffins
- Wholemeal pancakes with banana and honey
- Breakfast egg, bacon and avocado wrap
- Scrambled eggs with wholegrain toast fingers
- Overnight oats or chia seed pudding with fruit
- Low sugar wholegrain cereal with milk and fruit (make sure to check the label as a lot of cereals contain hidden nasties)
- Hard boiled eggs and fresh fruit
Remember that having something for breakfast is much better than having nothing at all. If you are time poor and don’t have time for the ideas above especially on weekdays, opt for some toast and fresh fruit while heading out the door. Your bellies and brains will thank you for it later!
